Where we are in Bangladesh
Kanaighat is an Upazila of Sylhet District in the Division of Sylhet Bangladesh. From the early part of the 20th century, many of our forefathers started to arrive in the UK. They were scattered around the country and mainly living in the industrial cities of Great Britain.
Our ethos is community driven
In the passage of time, people migrating from Kanaighat to the United Kingdom have been growing gradually in numbers. As time went by, like any other migrant community, the needs and aspirations of the migrant people from Kanaighat community has evolved and are continually evolving.
Our humble beginning
It became part of the discussion amongst people from Kanaighat on how to get together, to organise, to keep contact with each other, to help and support each other’s need and to share our common values. They also found common grounds on which they all can unite together as a group or as a community. The common grounds that the early people from Kanaighat found were their values and heritage and it is also our values and heritage that is our roots in Kanaighat, Bangladesh.
The Kanaighat Association UK was established on 22 September 1985. In 2002, it became a registered charity organisation in England and Wales. As a charitable organisation since its inception, it has been working to help people in need both in the UK and in Bangladesh.
The Association was founded by some of the forward-thinking people from Kanaighat living in the UK. A number of its founding members have passed away and some of them are still alive, are actively participating and positively contributing to the Association’s activities.
The Association is now over a third of a century old and has been providing some superb social exemplary activities.
We remember our predecessors and pray for their selfless efforts for creating a platform to share our common values and heritage.
